When Should You Turn Off Your Water Heater?

As a homeowner, you might be looking for ways to cut energy costs. Turning off your water heater when not in use may cross your mind. But is it a good practice?

At Roberts Plumbing Hydro Jet & Rooter, we don’t recommend switching your unit on and off frequently. Doing so will wear down your water heater installation quickly and lead to issues down the road. The energy savings are also negligible. However, you may turn off your unit during the following instances:

IN CASE THERE IS A LEAK

If you notice or suspect a leak in your water heater, act fast and turn off the unit immediately, along with the water supply. Even if it’s small, a leak can quickly escalate, flood your home, and pose safety hazards when left untreated. In severe cases, you may need a complete hot water heater replacement.

IF YOU’RE AWAY FOR A LONG VACATION

If you are about to go on a long vacation, you may turn off the water heater. Newer traditional and tankless water heater models also come with a “vacation” mode, which lowers the water temperature to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This keeps the water warm while reducing the strain on your unit during normal operation. By the time you return home and need hot water, the unit itself won’t be a cause for concern.

You can always rely on Roberts Plumbing Hydro Jet & Rooter for an extensive range of water heater services. If you have other questions or concerns about your water heater, our pros are here to assist you. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.
